Million Dollar Decorators on Bravo TV Has High Point Furniture Market All Over Episode #7

Nathan is second from left and Mary is in the middle.

Being a reality junkie from my fascination with the housewives series on Bravo TV . I was watching a new series on Bravo TV called Million Dollar Decorators. Episode #7 prominately displayed 2 of the decorators Nathan Turner and Mary McDonald who had a lighting and furniture lines at the High Point Furniture Market. In one segment of the show it had the 2 California decorators take a trip to  Hills Lexington Barbecue ,  it looked like Nathan was enjoying the Barbecue but Mary was having a hard time at this establishment.

The episode is called "The Suite Life" and it was first on Bravo TV on July 12, 2011. You can probably catch the show again because Bravo always repeats these shows on a weekly basis. Time Warner has a on demand for Bravo TV but this show is not a part of the on demand from TIme Warner.

It is great to see High Point N.C. get some national tv exposure. Nathan Turner wrote on his Bravo TV blog this about High Point Furniture Market:

So you saw the beginning of it all tonight when Mary and I went to High Point, NC. I typically go twice a year with Elite Leather to show new collections. It really is the most important place for the furniture industry, and it was so fun being there with Mary, even though she was a bit of a fish out of water. I actually enjoy it there. . .lets face it, I'm really just there for the BBQ!
To read more on his blog CLICKHERE

Then we had Mary McDonald also write on her Bravo TV blog:

Too bad you guys did not have time to see all our crazy antics in between my lighting launch meetings and Nathan's furniture launch. We played pool at a poll hall -- I was terrible btw -- visited every BBQ joint in town, shopped at some great showrooms, visited a three-story house that was made to look like a huge chest of drawers, all topped off by the glamorous Architectural DIgest party. The antics were endless

What great exposure for our city , the region and also the state.

$49,347 City of High Point Wasteful Spending on Public Notices in High Point Enterprise

Triadwatch did a public records request with the major municipalities in Guilford County in Greensboro and High Point in regards to public notices in the local print media and how much this cost the taxpayers.

Below is a e mail exchange between a representative from the League of Municipalities who wanted this information and a City of High Point employee.
________________________________________________________________________________

Karl
Here is the info from High Point that includes notices for Planning & Zoning, Purchasing (bids), Transportation (MPO) and City Council.
$49,357 for FY 09-10
It does not include notices of wastewater spills – which would take some time to get as those do not come through the Manager’s office. If you need these, I’ll try to get but can’t promise by Wednesday.
Hope this helps.

Just this week we learn that in the N.C. House of Representatives  the effort to dump public notices in newspapers was taken off the table, here is a link to the article CLICKHERE

The NC Press Association has won the battle but not the war on this issue. More to come and in a future post we will add up all the money in regards to this public records request to have a grand total .

$96,288.47 City of Greensboro Wasteful Spending on Public Notices in Greensboro News and Record

Triadwatch did a public records request from our local municipalities in regards to public notices in our paid print media outlets. This consisted of asking Greensboro, High Point  and Guilford County  governments just how much taxpayer funded money actually on a yearly basis went to public notices in the papers.

The City of Greensboro provided pdf files that showed the actual invoices of what has happened in the past year and a half. Above you will see the 4 files on the invoices to the City of Greensboro from the Greensboro News and Record.

Last week we provided the total amount given to the other paid local paper in Greensboro called Carolina Peacemaker which totaled $31,665.96 here is a link to that story CLICKHERE

We also had a post on triadwatch which talked about on the Guilford County side of government where we had the tax delinquency bill for one ad in the Greensboro News and Record cost $86,740.29
CLICKHERE  for that post.

We are still in the process of getting more information from the Guilford County attorney's office in regards to the public notices and the invoices . We also have some numbers from the City of High Point that will be shared tomorrow.

Now let's tale a closer look at the Greensboro News and Record and the invoices provided from the Public Affairs office of the City of Greensboro.

Part #1 Greensboro News and Record Invoices $39,935.29
Part #2 Greensboro News and Record Invoices $24,701.37
Part #3 Greensboro News and Record Invoices $20.192.67
Part #4 Greensboro News and Record Invoices $11,459.14

TOTAL=  $96,288.47

When you add up the bills from the Carolina Peacemaker and the Greensboro News and Record since January of 2010 the City of Greensboro has paid out over $127,954.43 in public notices. One thing to note from the invoices that is very interesting is that the Carolina Peacemaker has it's own notary on hand at no charge to the City of Greensboro but when you look at the Greensboro News and Record invoices it has a $15.00 notary charge for every invoice sent to the City of Greensboro .It would be great to get the explanation on how one doesn't charge for a notary but the other does. Plenty of money could be saved if they didn't have to charge the $15.00 or it could be that someone at Carolina Peacemaker see this post and starts charging the city for the public notices.

Why does this matter because we have a full throttle assault from the print media in trying to block a bill from happening in the North Carolina Legislature to let local and county governments post public notices on their own web sites and save taxpayers money all over this state. Locally we have seen the Greensboro News and Record post an editorial on this subject and also have a full page ad in paper in regards to this issue they got the ads from the NC Press Association and here is a link to the site with all the ads they wanted to put in papers all over this state CLICKHERE   . We can also see that the High Point Enterprise has gotten into the game as well in putting a web ad in regards to the opposition of this bill compliments of the NC Press Association CLICKHERE and look in the bottom left hand corner of their main web page where a man has his huge mouth open saying TRUST US!

With all the talk about what we see on the local level in regards to public notices it was interesting to do a little research and see that the Charlotte Observer probably makes quite a bit of money from the taxpayers of Mecklenberg County but it also provides a place online from their main web page titled Legal Notices CLICKHERE  which is a part of legalnotice.org . This is what is needed from our local governments  have a place where everyone can get online and save plenty of taxpayers money all over this state. Some will argue that not everyone has a computer . That statement is correct and we can also say that some people do not have money as well and the public notices are only offered in paid print media , no weekly free papers are allowed to post public notices in their papers.

The time is now for this bill to pass on a state level but if not then we might just see a local bill to save the taxpayers of Guilford County over $100,000 in regards to the tax delinquency notice in the local papers. We will see what happens but if you would like to save yourself some tax money this is a no brainer and it is time to talk to your state representative and if you need to know who they are CLICKHERE

Gerrymandering Needs To Get A Closer Look In North Carolina , Time To Get A Move On, REPOST

This post is a repost from earlier in the year where all of the citizens of North Carolina need to be aware of the gerrymandered districts and with the shift of power in both houses of N.C. government and what will happen next.

HAT TIP:UNDER THE DOME CLICKHERE

At Duke University there will be a panel discussion titled,

Drawing Lines: The Future of Redistricting in America

February 26, 2010 ~ Duke University School of Law

With the new census for 2010 coming out there will be plenty of discussion on the way our politicians pick us not how we pick our politicians. It is amazing to see so many local North Carolina House and Senate seats go untouched with no competition because too many districts are gerrymandered to death in this state and plenty other states all over this country.

What is gerrymandering? Gerrymandering is the manipulation of the redistricting process for political gain.

Triadwatch is going to start a new section to the left titled STOP GERRYMANDERING with links to plenty of web sites all over this country who are trying to make a difference in this subject . There is also going to be a documentary out soon on this subject CLICKHERE

Let's take a closer look at our federal districts in Guilford County and how screwed up it looks  for Congressman Mel Watt in red, Brad Miller in green and Howard Coble in teal.

  Guilford County Congressional Districts

As you can see we have 3 congressman splitting up greensboro like a 3 way pie. Now ask yourself this question, out of the three congressman who do you see the most around these parts and do you feel represented by 2 of them being from 2 completely different parts of North Carolina where Mel Watt is from Charlotte and Brad Miller is from Raleigh. It is time for a complete overhaul of this gerrymandering where back in 2000 Brad Miller gerrymandered himself into his own district , how nice was that.

Examples of a unbiased district-drawing algorithm in action / comparisons with gerrymandered districts drawn by politicians here is the link to range voting and below is what it might look like on a map of North Carolina and our 13 districts. CLICKHERE

Range Voting Districts in NC

It is time for a non partisan commission to look at our local, state and federal districts all over this state and come up with a fair and balanced representation of like minded and territorial districts that make sense for the people of this state. What we have now is a total joke and everyone knows it. Even the politicians on the minority side of North Carolina politics like minority leader Phil Berger who lives in Rockingham County and Stan Bingham from Davidson County but crosses over into Guilford County which goes against our State Constitution.

Here is also a post from May of 2009 with a title "North Carolina Redistricting Experts Ask: Is There A Better Way" CLICKHERE

We will see what happens after the census but wanted to put a blog bug in your ear about this issue for the citizens of North Carolina.

_________________________________________________________________

As you can see from above, this email from Friday January 8, 2010 will show you the relationship between Marlene Sanford from the Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition (TREBIC) and Jason Cannon from the Greensboro Partnership . Why does this email above even matter well let's take a look at a recent article in the Greensboro News & Record with a title "Commissioners skeptical about merging depts.with Greensboro" CLICKHERE this past week. Here is a little part of the article.

"Marlene Sanford is chairwoman of the Intergovernmental Planning Task Force, which has been studying a merger since April. She’s also president of the Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition. She said her task force’s study found that the county can’t count on a merger saving money or making the departments more efficient, but it would make development easier once the economy turns around.

Sanford’s task force recommended a merger by the end of the year, saying the path for developers is too obstructed now."

Now we have the president of TREBIC who has an agenda and is the chairman of this Intergovernmental Planning Task Force, what a joke. Now we need to take a closer look at who are the members of this Intergovernmental Planning Task Force. Here is a closer look at who is on this committee. Here is what is on the greensboro n.c. web site CLICKHERE

This task force includes people with a variety of interests to provide a well-balanced perspective on issues facing Guilford County and the cities located within the county. The primary charge of the task force is to study the pros and cons of merging the cities' planning and inspection functions with the county's planning and inspection functions. The task force will review key issues and provide recommendations to the County Commissioners and City Councils.

Task Force Appointees
Jeff Deal Guilford Planning Board
Henry Isaacson TREBIC MEMBER, Ex-Mayor Johnson's Steering Committee
Craig Fleming TREBIC MEMBER
Marlene Sanford TREBIC President
Sandy Carmany Pleasant Garden Town Manager
Michael Brandt Summerfield Town Manager
Bruce Oakley Oak Ridge Town Manager
Dan Pritchett Engineering firm
Mike Westcott Engineering firm
Gary Hill TREBIC MEMBER
Keith Price TREBIC MEMBER for Samet
Greg Garrett TREBIC MEMBER for Shugart
Gary Wolf TREBIC MEMBER
Susan Spangler Greensboro Zoning
Ray Trapp Greensboro Zoning
Marsh Prause TREBIC MEMBER for Smith Moore Leatherwood Law Firm Neighborhood Congress
Chuck Truby TREBIC MEMBER CPT engineering
Mary Skenes TREBIC representative for Yost and Little and Greensboro Zoning

Take a look above at all the TREBIC members of this intergovernmental agency 10 out of 18. This is what is wrong with soo many boards and commissions in Greensboro and Guilford County the deck is stacked in their favor. As the saying goes look at the FOX GUARDING THE HEN HOUSE. To hear them say on the web site that this is a well balanced perspective is laughable.

When will see a change in the mind set on who needs to be appointed to these boards and commissions because it has become a broken record. How has it become a broken record because here is what was reported back in 2008 from the protest petition for Greensboro N.C. blog

"In the Triad Business Journal January18-24 2008 in the Triad Talk section this is what was said. " Developers always have the upper hand in Guilford County" says Reid Phillips, an attorney with Brooks Pierce in Greensboro. They have boards packed with their people. They have experience. They are masters of divide and conquer. They can also wear people out with continuances.

It is hard for grass roots efforts to compete with this modus operandi."

Also in the same post let's also take a look at what was reported back in May 22, 2008 and look at some of the members of this land development ordinance committee if you would like to see the whole article on the propoganda TREBIC letter sent to the state legislators to deny the citizens of Greensboro the right to Protest Petition CLICKHERE . Below is another part of this post.

Where can we start with this one 2 points first on how your hear them say "most developers voluntarily meet with neighbors". The key word is "most" it is amazing that there is not a requirement for the developers to meet with neighbors in Greensboro.David Wharton who is a member of the Greensboro Land Development Ordinance Committee had this to say"This might interest you: I and others tried hard to get a "meet and confer" requirement written into the new ordinance, which would require a developer seeking a rezoning to meet with the neighbors beforehand and to report to the zoning commission the outcome of the meeting.

The best we could get was a requirement that developers must report to the zoning commission on their efforts to confer with neighbors, which means that if they didn't try to meet, they have to say that."

As you can see David Wharton says the best we could get, because people like Gary Rogers with Starmount Company,Trip Brown with Brown Investment,Keith Price with Samet Companies,James Cox with Mid-City Urban,Jessica Marlies with Brooks Pierce Law Firm,Mike Fox with Tuggles Duggins Law Firm,Dick Franks with Koury Corp.,Gary Hill with McAlphine Company,Gary Wolf with SparrowWolf Law Firm, and Mary Skenes with Yost and Little. So 10 out of 14 are TREBIC members or close allies with TREBIC for the Land Development Ordinance Citizen Advisory Team. As said before by Lawyer Reid Phillips ,boards get packed with TREBIC all the time especially in Greensboro where as Mike Barber said at a Greensboro City Council meeting on April 1st "TREBIC has been contacted and TREBIC has some interest".

The other point has to do with TREBIC saying that " Protest Petition is antiquated and should be repealed statewide". It should be noted that Protest Petitions are not antiquated but the exemption of Greensboro from this North Carolina General Statute is antiquated. Let's have the State Legislators pass a bill to make Greensboro comply with this statute and then TREBIC can lobby to deny the citizens of the whole state of North Carolina their right to protest unwanted development in their neighborhood.Good luck with that endeavor.

It is also noted that they left out the condescending quote from Gary Rogers TREBIC chairman saying that Greensboro had the foresight to exempt themselves from Protest Petitions. No, Mr. Rogers, it was not foresight. It was an effort to take away a right of the citizens to use the power of petitions against unwanted development in established neighborhoods

Look at some of the same names on the ldo committee and this intergovernmental agency . Gary Wolf, Gary Hill, Mary Skenes , Keith Price and TREBIC in general. QUIT,QUIT, QUIT doing this. We saw the true colors of TREBIC when they tried to deny every citizen of Greensboro the right to Protest Petition in the zoning process. As we have seen lately it has proven to be a major part of the process in cases on elm and cornwallis plus also the spring garden zoning case with the newman buildings which will come up soon in a future case.

We still haven't even talked about the deck stacking of TREBIC on the RUCO commission .

It is time for a complete overhaul of all of these boards and commissions in Guilford County and not let these lobbying groups like TREBIC stack the deck in their favor.

Time for a Reminder of Where You Can Place Political Sign Placement and Pictures of What Not To Do.

Greensboro City Signs 2008

It is time for a reminder of where you can place political signs in the triad area. Above you will see the regulations for the City of Greensboro and if you would like to see Guilford County, Jamestown and High Point CLICKHERE .

Greensboro City Council member Nancy Vaughan has some pictures of campaign signs that are in areas that are illegal here are a few of the pictures. As you will see these pictures were taken on plenty of places up and down battleground avenue with the last picture taken at the intersection of battleground and pisgah church road where there is a huge median that is owned by the City of Greensboro and the whole median is illegal to post signs on. It is time to take them down .

Greensboro City Council member Nancy Vaughan had this to say on Facebook,

I am stunned by the number of illegal election signs! It is illegal to place signs in traffic medians or traffic islands. All Don Vaughan, NC Senate signs are placed with the landowners permission. If you see one of Don's signs in an illegal location you have our permission to take it down. I challenge other candid...ates to say the same!! If you can't follow the law how can we trust you to make the law?

These were taken on a small section of Battleground Avenue this morning. I can only imagine what the rest of the district looks like. I challenge people to hold "their" people ("their" team) accountable. When Don sees that one of his signs ...has been put up illegally he takes it down (and the only way that can occur is if it is one of the many that we've had to replace that have been "stolen" from private property and put up somewhere else). Candidates need to train their volunteers to do the right thing. To me, it is a question of integrity and it's the law."

There are a  lot of people who just don't care about these rules and regulations . This issue has been going on for a long time with little enforcement but i think there needs to be a NEW RULE . The new rule would be that every sign will have a section of it where the owner of the property will put his address on the sign along with his signature on each sign in the owners property. If there isn't a signature along with the exact address for the sign then the sign is illegal and needs to go. Read the sign regulations and have a great campaign.

Here is What Stack The Deck With TREBIC Developers Looks Like in Greensboro N.C.on CAT TEAM

The City of Greensboro had a public meeting on 2-9-2010 where the citizens of Greensboro could get a overview of the new Land Development Ordinance rewrite and what it will look like with approval from the Greensboro City Council. Let's take a closer look at the video below to see just how the local special interest group known as TREBIC which stands for the triad real estate and building industry coalition stacks the deck in their favor.

If you want to get a history of just how the local developers or you can call them TREBIC stacked the deck as you can see from the above video with a ratio of 8 developers - 3 others Yes Weekly has a article with a title "Developers more assertive on panel to rewrite ordinance", CLICKHERE,

Then over the summer of 2009 Triadwatch went to a community public  meeting at Leonard Rec Center  on the LDO rewrite and also looked at the document in question . One glaring issue that came out of the meeting was a post on July 27, 2009 with a title "Greensboro neighborhoods will NOT get a fair shake in the zoning process , thanks to TREBIC", CLICKHERE

Then a few days ago we see that the Greensboro Neighborhood Congress has some of the same problems where TREBIC members on this LDO would not want to make it a requirement to meet with the neighborhoods here is that post CLICKHERE

During the meeting we also find out that city staff was the ones who sent out the invites to this citizens advisory team. When will these elected officials or staff quit putting all these TREBIC members on these boards and commissions.

In a future post we will see how the City of Greensboro and the Guilford County Commissioners wanted to form a task force to come up with ways to save money and consolidate departments, High Point doesn't want any part of this consolidating. Wouldn't you know it that the president of TREBIC was the chairman of this committee in Marlene Sanford with plenty of other TREBIC members stacking the deck again in TREBIC's favor.

When will we ever see a time where TREBIC doesn't have it's hands in every board and commission and advisory council . It must be nice to have a luncheon right before this LDO meeting to get unfettered access to our local officials at Grandover, like TREBIC hosted last week.

Start looking out for the citizens not the special interest.

N.C. Liquor laws - How a $5.79 case of vodka ends up costing $61.92 | StarNewsOnline.com | Star News | Wilmington, NC

N.C. Liquor laws - How a $5.79 case of vodka ends up costing $61.92 StarNewsOnline.com Star News Wilmington, NC

Great investigative reporting by the Wilmington Star News on our state Alcoholic Beverage Control and how their distribution works in the state with a graph and a video about the local father and son team who run the New Hanover County ABC system and Billy Williams is making $232,000 a year as a administrator of New Hanover County ABC.

To see the whole report and video click on the title above or the embedded link above as well.

There is a lot of talk about revamping the whole system all over this state. We can recall locally where the High Point ABC Commission were in a little scandal back in 2006 here is a Inside Scoop from the Greensboro News and Record CLICKHERE

The new High Point ABC Board spent its second meeting Wednesday looking over the system's books. The financial tutorial was needed - newly appointed Chairman David Wall thought the system made $8 million in revenue last year. It actually made $10 million.

New General Manager Rosalind Stewart and Finacial Director Cindy Wooten said they spent a lot of time interpreting the books before the meeting.

Stewart said she's not sure what at least one of the system's accounts - entitled miscellanous accounts payable - was used for. She said it hasn't been activite in a while and she wasn't sure why it was created.

Board member Beth Koonce asked if they were going to get rid of the "employee welfare fund". State investigators believe the fund was generated through the illegal sale of both promotional mini-bottles and extra cases of liquor accidentally sent by the state warehouse.

Wooten said they were keeping the fund for incidentals. She said the fund was first created when they needed to send an employee flowers after her mother had died.

No one said where the money for the fund was coming from - I bet they'll find a legitimate source this time.

Let's hope we will see plenty of changes to the Alcoholic Beverage Control in the near future and thanks to the Wilmington Star News for that investigative report on it as well.
