City Hopes New Rail Yard Kicks Off Boom Around Airport

in the observer article is this

"The hope is that improved roads and other infrastructure, such as water and sewer service, will attract more businesses, including manufacturing, trucking and warehouse companies. More than 5,000 acres of largely undeveloped land known as Dixie Berryhill sits west of the airport, and Charlotte Douglas is spending $35 million to buy a 370-acre neighborhood south of the rail yard.

Christine said about 25 properties in the neighborhood have been purchased, and an additional 60 are at the appraisal stage before the airport buys them. The plan is to raze the houses and use the land for businesses tied to the rail yard.

Charlotte’s capital improvement plan also includes $43 million worth of road improvements in Dixie Berryhill. Christine said his committee is looking at the best way to build those roads, which will also include modifications to straighten and expand existing roads.

A grand opening of the intermodal yard is planned for next year, said Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman. Most of the rails have been laid and rolling cranes are in place, but construction of buildings and support facilities is ongoing.
 The lot cost $92 million, including almost $16 million worth of state and federal grants. North Carolina and Charlotte also funded $9.7 million worth of road improvements around the rail yard, including a new interchange at Interstate 485 and West Boulevard that allows trucks easier access to the facility."_____________________________________________________________________________ Buying out whole neighborhoods for $35 million dollars. Richie Rich Roy Carroll's Senior Hires Refuse To Move To Greensboro

Our glowing new publisher of the Rhino Times has a new article out this week which is mostly a endorsement of his friend Robbie Perkins for Mayor of Greensboro. One interesting aspect of this column is this,

"The last three senior hires I have made at The Carroll Companies have refused to move to Greensboro.  These people wanted to stay in Raleigh, Charlotte and Colorado and commute to work weekly instead of moving here.  They commute into Greensboro every Monday morning, live in temporary housing and then leave on Friday afternoon.  These are people with very specific skills that I have to have to grow my businesses.
Several friends of mine have complained about the same problem.  This is an issue this city must address if we want to recruit new businesses and grow our existing businesses.  I am concerned any CEO is going to think long and hard about relocating to a city where there are significant impediments to attracting the talent they need for their business to be successful.
We are losing the battle for attracting new and higher paying jobs and recruiting professionals to our community.  Why?  Because we lag other peer cities in job creation, cultural outlets and education.
So what does that mean to us long term?  It means that as the cost of government continues to grow, as it will, if we don’t increase our population and tax base, then our taxes will increase."

Let's get this straight you Richie Rich Roy Carroll could increase the tax base of Greensboro attracting higher paying senior level jobs but they refuse to live in Greensboro . Does this make any sense? You say we are losing the battle for attracting new jobs but you then hire senior level positions who refuse to live in Greensboro. . What is so bad about Greensboro, please explain? You say we lag other peer cities in job creation but then you still hire senior level positions who take temporary housing in Greensboro all week then go home to their families in Charlotte, Raleigh and Colorado.

Greensboro is a great city to live in and to read Roy Carroll's diatribe is sad.Thanks Roy for not increasing our population and tax base.

Greensboro City Council Saves $25,000 Not Giving TREBIC Lobbyist Contract Has Been Pulled

32. Resolution authorizing contract between the City of Greensboro and TREBIC (Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition) to assist with the Jordan Lake Rules legislation.

This issue was talked about a few weeks ago in this blog post titled

Mayor of Greensboro with another Conflict of Interest Incentive Grant in Greensboro

 

 

On the agenda for the City of Greensboro for January 15, 2013 is this:

33. Resolution authorizing Economic Development Incentive Grant for 102 North Elm Street Associates, LLC D/B/A The Southeastern Building not to exceed $238,422.

Well as you can see from the above pictures, look at who is the leasing agent for the building, none other than the Mayor of Greensboro Robbie Perkins . Hopefully we will see the Mayor who has done plenty in the past recuse himself again because of a conflict of interest.

The bad on Greensboro from Sunshine Review

Administrative officials have only email contact forms, as opposed to individual email addresses, and physical addresses are unavailable.

Links to zoning information are available, but the links do not work.

Awarded contract information is unavailable, and a search does not generate relevant results.

Lobbyists, memberships to lobbying organizations and associated fees are unavailable.

Archived budgets are unavailable.

Looks like with a C- rating there is room for improvement and one aspect that needs improvement is to be able to search for minutes from past Greensboro City Council meeting while putting in searchable words like for example "conflicts of interest and Robbie Perkins" this should let us search for any past meeting and see the minutes from this meeting. Right now you have to try to remember which council meeting it was in then search each date then scroll through all the minutes that were taken to see if you have the right saying. It takes a very long time to do this but seeing that Greensboro televises it's meetings is a huge plus to even go back to past meetings and watch the video even to see Greensboro Councilmen Zack Matheny tell someone to sit down.

If the sunshine review needs help with the wasted money for the City of Greensboro on hiring a Lobbyist here is a link to my post on this issue which the city gets a missing label for this area of their review. here is the post on that titled "City of Greensboro Set to Waste Taxpayers Money Going After Taxpayers Money to Hire Federal Lobbyist" then we find out later that the mayor has been friends with the Sapersteins since the lobbyist was a kid, nice cronyism on this issue. Hopefully we will see the reversal of this federal lobbyist in the future and the City of Greensboro can say they spend no taxpayer money going after taxpayer money.

Nice to see this from the sunshine review and hopefully they will succeed in this endeavor and we can shine a light on all cities , counties and state government all over this country.

Let's not not understand how and why Zack Matheny injected himself into the curfew debate and who's on what side: Ed Wolverton and Milton Kern on "Safety," in Downtown Greensboro

"Ed Wolverton, president of Downtown Greensboro Inc.,
worked with Matheny on the proposals.

“A community may say they want the license for any nightclub
that stays open after 11 p.m. or maybe 12 a.m.” ...Wolverton said.

Wolverton said the teen curfew proposal is related to two incidents last summer
when a club had a “teen night” that led to fighting in a parking lot.

Should two incidents = restrictions for all teens?

Milton Kern...was another business leader who helped craft the proposals.

“The nightclub owners have to understand
they have to be responsible business people
and not have a 'shoot ’em up,’ wild night life,” Kern said.

Didn't the N Club already voluntarily shut down?

How can this not be about keeping young black youth

who live very near downtown Greensboro being relatively unwelcome

by some who may have seemed what some could consider somewhat bigoted like?

Would any others who attended what appeared to be a meeting of "Stakeholders"

after the N Club event

like to concur as to some of the topics of conversation

at what may have been the Empire Room?

Who was there? 

If most of our local print media is aware of what most don't, 

why wouldn't they bother filling everyone else in?
