How to completely destroy Downtown Greensboro?

Stupidity is better kept a secret than displayed

Heraclitus of Ephesus

"Councilman Zack Matheny announced several plans
...designed to give police effective tools to maintain order downtown

“It’s vital to the residents of Greensboro that we take the necessary and serious steps
to improve the downtown environment
so that everyone can enjoy themselves in a safe atmosphere,” Matheny said.

“These measures promote not only public safety,
but will hold downtown businesses accountable for the actions of their visitors.”

Among the changes...:

Zero tolerance for quality of life infractions that occur in downtown;
that includes cracking down on loitering, panhandling and other disruptive behavior.
What if you look at a police officer the wrong way?

What if someone who hates you rats you out
for something you didn't do?

A city ordinance revision to prevent loitering
within 50 feet of a business selling alcoholic beverages.

Is "50 feet" just about most of downtown?

A new curfew ordnance banning minors under 18
from being downtown after 11 p.m.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?

How many 18 to 30 year olds want to pay to park,
and then get randomly carded downtown?

Expanding the surveillance camera system...

Big Brother on Elm Street?

Instituting a $5 fee to park in city-owned parking decks after 9 p.m.

How to create traffic jams of drivers not wanting to pay to park
and drive those who don't want to pay away from Downtown Greensboro
by Zach Matheny?

Where is everyone going to park?

...some of this just creeps me out.

If a guy pays $5 to park his car downtown,
will he be free to walk or stand wherever he wants?

What if he's cited for loitering?

Will the police escort him to the parking garage and make him go home?

Brian Clarey

Matheny wants to create a new entertainment license for all nightclubs
with a capacity more than 100 that includes:

Certification and training of all club security personnel...

At an additional cost to business owners
that they wouldn't have to pay elsewhere?

Require security officers...

At an additional cost to business owners
that they wouldn't have to pay elsewhere?

Install a video surveillance system at all club entryways and exits...

That will drive away patrons?

Who wants to be caught on camera at 2:00am
coming out of a nightclub?

If the recordings are owned by the government,
will they be subject to public records requests?

Why not a live cam on the Internet?

Why not inject GPS chips into our children?

Compliance with all applicable laws and payment of all city taxes,
municipal water and sanitation services, operating fines and other violations.

The entertainment license is subject to revocation for violation of city ordinances.

Two things are infinite:
the universe and human stupidity;
and I'm not sure about the the universe.

Albert Einstein

Just think of how stupid the average person is,
and then realize half of them are even stupider.

George Carlin

Did some put Zach up to this?
.
Does this have anything to do with the hotel, PAC
and/or the Civil Rights Museum
and/or Center Point?
.
Why do the proposals seem over the top?
.
Who is pulling the strings?
.
If Zach probably wouldn't have done this in a vacuum,
who else is backing the proposals?
.
Didn't Downtown Greensboro recieve $127,500 taxpayer dollars
for the "1st quarter."

Dear TriadWatch:

“Government is the only enterprise on earth that when it fails, it merely does the same thing over again, just bigger” - Don Luskin, TrendMacro

Stepping back for a moment, one must consider an economic axiom: all schemes unravel. The centrally planned scheme [urban-socioeconomic developers exposed i.e. social planners lay eggs -or- eggheads lay social plans] of a downtown Mecca of entertainment and cosmopolitan habitational is unraveling.

Faced with an unraveling scheme, the answer of course, is……. another scheme! Moreover, the new scheme to fix the old scheme will need yet another scheme upon the second scheme’s unraveling…. and so the story goes with endless schemes spawning from the original scheme.

The entire sorted downtown Confused-boro story was explained long, long ago:

"It's very good jam," said the Queen.

"Well, I don't want any to-day, at any rate."

"You couldn't have it if you did want it," the Queen said. "The rule is jam tomorrow and jam yesterday but never jam to-day."

"It must come sometimes to "jam to-day,""Alice objected.

"No it can't," said the Queen. "It's jam every other day; to-day isn't any other day, you know."

"I don't understand you," said Alice. "It's dreadfully confusing."
