Journalists should:
Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.

Citizens Against Government Waste Porker of the Month is Agriculture Sec. Tom Vilsack
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Porker of the Month for asserting in a television interview on August 16 that the Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, qualifies as “an economic stimulus,” explaining that “every dollar of SNAP benefits generates $1.84 in the economy in terms of economic activity.” Sec. Vilsack’s claims ignited outrage from many members of the political news media and blogosphere, several of whom compared the remarks to Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) July, 2010 claim that unemployment insurance “creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative” and to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s August 10, 2011 statement that extending unemployment benefits will create “up to a million” jobs. “We are entering a brave new world for economics,” said CAGW President Tom Schatz. “If one takes the ludicrous analyses of prominent Democrats seriously, it is a shame that millions more Americans do not qualify for SNAP benefits. Indeed, the best course of action going forward would be to extend SNAP to all Americans, even affluent ones with huge salaries. That seems to be the administration’s pro-growth strategy.” For attempting to convince taxpayers that the road to prosperity is paved with food stamps, Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack is CAGW’s August, 2011 Porker of the Month. Greensboro District #3 Candidate Jay Ovittore Will Not Bow To The TREBIC CARTEL
Ovittore Will Not Bow to Real Estate
Greensboro, NC 8/28/11 – In a move to show his fellow District 3 neighbors and constituents his commitment to a change in how local government works, Jay Ovittore today announced he will not seek the endorsement of TREBIC’s joint election committee or the Greensboro Landlords Association.
Ovittore says, “For far too long, our local real estate developers have had a monetary stranglehold on our City Council giving them an unfair advantage over average citizens. I see serving as a Councilman as a job beholden to serve the citizens of my district. I have no problem sitting and listening to the real estate community, but they will not get any special treatment compared to my next door neighbor or the family that lives down the street. I am fully aware that our developers have a role in how our city grows, but their ability to usurp power via campaign donations has got to stop so we can fix our local problems and serve our citizens, not just a select few. I have heard from the public repeatedly that they want representation that wasn’t purchased by real estate developers. I will be that representation. Being true to myself and those I hope to represent, I will not seek the endorsement of TREBIC’s joint election committee or the Greensboro Landlord’s Association.”
“I do see real problems in our local real estate market. The very people I am not going to be a pawn for, lobbied our state house to repeal our RUCO (Rental Unit Certificate of Occupancy) program and others like it successfully. RUCO eliminated 80% of our sub-standard rental housing in Greensboro in 5 short years, all the while being fought by TREBIC and the Greensboro Landlords Association. RUCO didn’t only force rental property owners to keep their houses up to a minimum standard to live in, but ensured every Greensboro citizen that when they rented in our city they would be in a safe and habitable home. RUCO also kept property values in neighborhoods in a better position, which in turn kept tax revenue in a better position. Run down housing will bring down property values for houses that surround them, the same way foreclosures hurt entire neighborhoods.”
On skipping the questionnaires for TREBIC and GLA, Ovittore says, “There will be plenty of opportunities to answer questions for the public at local forums and in most local media. I look forward to debating my opponent in the coming months, giving the public a better option for Council and holding him accountable on issues I know my fellow constituents are upset about.”

Jordan Green plays with White Street Landfill numbers: "Brother, can you spare $12.50?
Greensboro property owners:
Are you willing to pony up $12.50 per year to keep the White Street Landfill closed?
That's how much the city manager's office
estimates that a homeowner could save on their taxes
assuming their house is assessed at $100,000 of valuation,
based on the "push and pack" option
to reopen the landfill that was approved by council last week.
The tax rate reduction that could be realized is 1.25 cents.
Staff ran the numbers in response to a question posed by Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan
at yesterday's briefing session.
...at-large Councilman Danny Thompson has been talking up the idea
of plowing the savings from reopening the landfill into a solid waste enterprise fund
to purchase an equity stake in a future regional landfill.
Jordan
Are you willing to pony up $12.50 per year to keep the White Street Landfill closed?
Why should Greensboro's taxpayers
have to pay for other's artificially inflated real estate values
after they bought property near the landfill at a discount?
Are most of those who purchased properties at a discount,
because the landfill was there when they bought in,
deserving of a premium funded by everyone else when they sell?
Could many in East Greensboro be recieving misreprested messages
from some who may profit from a particular outcome?
That's how much the city manager's office
estimates that a homeowner could save on their taxes
assuming their house is assessed at $100,000 of valuation,
based on the "push and pack" option
to reopen the landfill that was approved by council last week.
So if the average home in Greensboro is worth about $200,000
and the tax is $12.50 per year $100,000,
then is the average cost per homeowner really about $25 per year?
If per year is $25
and the landfill remains closed for 10 years,
then, all things remaining the same,
isn't the cost about $250 Jordan?
Should the question really might be:
Are you willing to pony up $250 to keep the White Street Landfill closed?
The tax rate reduction that could be realized is 1.25 cents.
Which equals how much actual money?
What if the price of gasoline etc... goes up?
How fast could the $12.50 per $100,000 turn into $20 per year?
$20 x average home value = $40,
x 10 years = $400.
Staff ran the numbers in response to a question posed by Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan
at yesterday's briefing session.
Which Nancy Vaughan?

White Street Landfill, Protest Petition, and Yes! Weekly Interview with Nancy Vaughan
Jordan Green from Yes!Weekly is interviewing the candidates in the upcoming Greensboro municipal election and we see that Protest Petition has been brought up on the campaign trail. In this Yes! Weekly blog interview we have this from the article:
"While Vaughan was not on council at the time the body took action on the matter in 2009, she strongly advocated for the restoration of the protest petition in Greensboro.
Under current zoning, phases VI and V at the White Street Landfill can only be used for fill dirt, excluding use as a landfill. In addition to obtaining permits from the NC Department of Natural Resources, the city council would also have to hold a public hearing and take a vote to rezone the tracts before the city could begin accepting household waste in the two areas.
“At that point, it would fall under the protest petition,” Vaughan said. “Residents with adjacent property would have the opportunity to file for the protest petition. If that’s the case, in order to use IV and V they will have to have a super majority…. That means they need seven affirmative votes. Do you think there are seven council members who would vote for that?"
Four members of the nine-member council have recently prevailed to reopen the landfill against three members opposed. Councilman Zack Matheny, like Vaughan, has been conflicted out."
To see the whole interview CLICKHERE
If what we hear from what Nancy Vaughan is saying then the gang of four will not have a fighting chance of this ever passing the Greensboro City Council with the Protest Petition being used in the zoning process. Will we see any other media outlet pick up this interesting piece of the White Street Landfill issue? This is a huge story and we will see if the protest petition is used by the abutting neighbors . More to come on this issue.

"City Councilwoman T. Dianne Bellamy-Small explains (sort of) her reasoning for withdrawing from the mayor’s race this week and running instead for a fifth term in District 1.
Bellamy-Small says in a letter in this week’s Carolina Peacemaker:
“I have decided I can strategically be more effective on the City Council
as a part of a tactical team to bring sensibility back to city government
by rescinding my filing for Mayor and becoming a candidate for District 1 for a fifth term.”
...she also makes it clear that she was not simply seeking publicity
by filing to ruin for mayor and that she was up to the task:
“I am as qualified as anyone running for mayor. To be mayor is just one way to lead.”
Bellamy-Small has always gone her own way,
with even her own distinctive style of leadership and even dress.
She isn’t always the easiest person to deal with one on one
(some of her fellow council members still say she can be very difficult),
but she has been a voice of reason in recent months
more often than many of us are willing to acknowledge.
No matter which office Bellamy-Small seeks when all is said and done,
this will be a pivotal election
that could significantly shift the balance of influence on the council
...even if only one seat changes hands.

Forget what you give, value what you get, return what you borrow, replace what you break, and forgive quickly.
If business’s are required to honestly report financial information,
and some assets and liabilities are not clearly included,
could some contrived inaccuracies violate the spirit of law?
Why would those controlling information dissemination
want to promote political candidates proposing tougher accounting enforcement,
military industrial accountability, high income and corporate taxation,
campaign finance reform and healthcare cutbacks?
What could happen to some elected officials
who vote to eliminate the real estate mortgage deduction?
When buying and selling are controlled by legislation,
the first thing to be bought and sold are legislators.

Are taxpayers encouraged to over-consume
when capital is easily borrowed and/or expenditure deductible?
Could alternative tactics increase wholeness in the near-term, if more other than actions coincident with geopolitical, economic events rise as a percentage of the overall you?
If short term geoecopolitical volatility and/or uncertainty increases,
could something other than potentially reduce harm,
stabilize and harmonize?

$2 Trillion "Dispute Over ‘Basic Math’", a Must Read Rating Cut Presentation, and Italy and Germany
"...John Bellows, the Treasury’s acting assistant secretary for economic policy
...found what he later called a $2 trillion “basic math error”
in ...a preliminary press release announcing S&P’s first-ever downgrade of U.S. creditworthiness.
...S&P...used figures from the Congressional Budget Office.
The discrepancy didn’t change the downgrade decision, S&P said,
because Treasury’s $2 trillion figure was derived by calculating government debt
over a 10-year period while S&P’s ratings are determined
using a three- to five-year time horizon.

"Postal Service posts $3B loss, warns of default"
"Reporting a $3.1 billion loss for its third quarter,
the U.S. Postal Service today warned that without congressional changes
it would default next month on a $5.5 billion payment to the federal government.
For the nine months that ended June 30,
the Postal Service lost a total of $5.7 billion.
...The default threat has raised the specter of a bailout.
..."Without changes in the law,
the Postal Service will be unable to make the $5.5 billion mandated prepayment
due in September."
The payment is for projected health care costs for future retirees.

S&P: "United States of America Long-Term Rating Lowered To 'AA+' On Political Risks And Rising Debt Burden; Outlook Negative"
"...The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government's medium-term debt dynamics.

What is a Banana Republic: "Govt Officials: US Expecting S&P Downgrade -- Based on 'Serious Mistake' in Analysis*"
Banana republic is a pejorative term
that refers to a politically unstable country
...ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, corrupt politico-economic plutocracy or oligarchy.
"Two government officials tell ABC News that the federal government
is expecting and preparing for bond rating agency Standard & Poor’s
to downgrade the rating of U.S. debt from its current AAA value.
Official reasons given, one official says,
will be the political confusion surrounding the process of raising the debt ceiling,
and lack of confidence
that the political system will be able to agree to more deficit reduction.
"S&P warned White House of imminent downgrade - source"
"Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's
served the Obama administration with notice Friday afternoon
that it planned to downgrade the U.S. government's AAA credit rating,
an administration official told CNN.
But S&P has yet to make its ruling public,
and the source told CNN that the agency is reconsidering
after the administration challenged S&P's analysis of the government's finances.
The source, a senior official involved in the discussions,
said the agency was off by "trillions" in its economic model
and was now working to revise its analysis.
The official described the talks as a "moving target"
and said "it's clear some people there still want to go forward"
and downgrade U.S. debt.
...the two other major rating agencies have both said
the deficit reduction actions taken by Congress were a step in the right direction.
On Tuesday, Moody's said the United States will keep its sterling AAA credit rating,
but lowered its outlook on U.S. debt to "negative."
CNN Money

Why would who pre-present a secret downgrade notice?
If the downgrade that was supposed to be secret isn't,
did the downgrade already theoretically happen?
But S&P has yet to make its ruling public,
and the source told CNN that the agency is reconsidering
after the administration challenged S&P's analysis of the government's finances.
How could it be even remotely possible
to not have your facts strait before downgrading
the most powerfull empire in the history of the world?
The source, a senior official involved in the discussions,

With GDP growth of about 5%
when it's looking like less than 2%?
The official described the talks as a "moving target"
and said "it's clear some people there still want to go forward"

So S&P says yes,
Obama says no,
and now someone has to man up?
