Matheny on misleading: Greensboro City Council Member Zack Matheny Still Won't Come Clean on His Anonymous Investors off of Highway 68

Matheny on misleading: Why did Zack accept donations from the Carroll’s, the Realtors and Landlord PACs after the pre-election filing deadline?

"He says the council has been a poster child for transparency in government," Matheny said.

"I would say Danny is the poster child for misleading the citizens."

The beauty of the democratic systems of thought control,
as contrasted with their clumsy totalitarian counterparts,
is that they operate by subtly establishing on a voluntary basis ,
aided by the force of nationalism and media control by substantial interests,
presuppositions that set the limits of debate,
rather than by imposing beliefs with a bludgeon.

Then let the debate rage,
the more lively and vigorous it is,
the better the propaganda system is served…

Those who do not accept the fundamental principles of state propaganda,
are simply excluded from the debate.
(or if noticed, dismissed as "emotional," "irresponsible," etc…)

Doesn't this Sound Familiar, Greensboro's News Industry?

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Did the Editorial Board of the Greensboro News & Record disenguously misinform their readers on Bev Perdue and RUCO?

"...last week the General Assembly stuck a fork in the city’s proactive and clearly effective
rental unit inspections program.

There the GOP went again, meddling in local affairs.

By signing the law, didn't Bev Perdue also meddle?

"...the city’s inspections director has signaled to property management industry a willingness to exempt some properties from mandatory inspection, while reassuring safe- housing advocates that the city will not tolerate substandard housing.

...A system reliant on tenants to bring substandard rental properties to the city’s attention would not adequately protect renters from dangerous and substandard conditions, in the view of Lori Loosemore, the city’s supervisor of neighborhood support.

“In the past, people didn’t know we were here,” she said. “They were scared to call because they were afraid their rent was going to go up if they complained. They were afraid their landlord was going to evict them. We have people from different countries, and some people don’t trust the government. If we go back to the complaint-driven system, it will go back to the way it was, and people will be afraid to call.” Despite being on record as listing proposed changes to the RUCO program to Placentino, Simmons insisted that any proposal would come from a group of  “stakeholders,” who would in turn recommend changes to the city council.

Simmons said he and his staff are in the process of convening the group and confirmed that likely stakeholders would include property management companies, in addition to industry representatives such as the Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition, or TREBIC, the Triad Apartment Association and the Greensboro Landlords Association...

Aren't they among Robbie's biggest campaign donors?

Many of those entities are also represented on the 15-member Rental Unit Certificate Advisory Board.

[Peter] Placentino, who serves on the Rental Unit Certificate Advisory Board, indicated in an Aug. 22 e-mail that his company holds no vested interest in the outcome of the tussle.

Brown Investment Properties is a Greensboro real estate company with 2,392 apartment units under its control

Didn't Robbie call for Mr. Placentino to be placed on the RUCO board?

Robbie Perkins, ...a real-estate developer ...indicated he holds full confidence in Simmons’ handling of changes to the city’s rental inspection program.

“Butch Simmons is someone I place a high level of trust in his judgment and ability,” Perkins said. “...If he feels it needs to be adjusted, I will support him. City council shouldn’t be getting into the details of RUCO. Does it have a goal that is laudable? Yes.”
It's not a lie if you believe it

If the folks that are managing the program say they can improve it and this is how to do it, let ’er go." [Perkins said]

Was Simmons for "improving" RUCO,
or was he pressured to cave into some TREBIC demands?

"Are the changes reasonable? Yes. Are the recommendations being made by someone who knows what they’re doing? Yes. Why should I dispute that?”

Why would Robbie want to dispute something his supporters want to have happen?

Asked whether amendments to the rental housing ordinance brought to council for approval by Simmons were likely to garner the required to five-vote majority to pass, Perkins gave a simple answer.

“I would hope so.”

Danny Thompson Gets Hammered by Rhino on Campaign Transparency

Tucked away in a article this week in the Rhino Times titled "Mayoral Candidates Gang Up on Mayor" CLICKHERE , we have a interesting report from John Hammer on the campaign of sitting at large Greensboro City Council member Danny Thompson. In the report the rhino has this to say,

"Thompson had big problems with his campaign finance reporting two years ago because he paid many of his campaign expenses out of his pocket instead of from the campaign account. It took a number of telephone conferences with election officials to get his amended, amended campaign finance reports in a fashion that was acceptable to the Guilford County Board of Elections.

By paying for advertising with personal checks and then reimbursing himself from the campaign account, there was no record of how the money was actually spent. Campaign finance reports are supposed to track both where the campaign money came from and how it was spent.

Tuesday night Thompson said he filed the same nondisclosure report two years ago and it helped him run a campaign under the radar. He said he planned to do the same this year."
then at end of article John Hammer had this to say:

"The very reason the campaign finance laws exist is an attempt to keep the playing field level and keep campaign spending out in the open. Two years ago Thompson pulled all kinds of stunts to keep his campaign report murky and said that much of the problem was caused by inexperience. This year Thompson has experience and appears to be doing the same type of thing."

This is the type of stuff that makes people like me and others want to report issues like the one that Danny Thompson is trying to pull to the Board of Elections. Sometimes you just shake your head and wonder what Danny Thompson is thinking on these campaign finance laws and why he is doing this again 2 years later. He should have learned from the last time but it seems that he hasn't changed one bit.

On 2-18-2010 Rhino had this post titled "Thompson's Campaign Finances Don't Add Up" CLICKHERE to look at a little history to this story.

Did the economic and political leadership of the most successful country in the world, sacrifice their children’s future for temporary prosperity?

Has the information industry been compromised?

"Majority in U.S. Continues to Distrust the Media, Perceive Bias"

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

"Dear Chairman Bernanke" Please do a thread Ed.

"It is our understanding that the Board Members of the Federal Reserve
will meet later this week to consider additional monetary stimulus proposals.

...we submit that the board should resist further extraordinary intervention in the U.S. economy,
particularly without a clear articulation of the goals of such a policy,
direction for success, ample data proving a case for economic action
and quantifiable benefits to the American people.

Should an entity partly responsible for creating systemic risk
be charged with regulating it?

It is not clear that the recent round of quantitative easing undertaken by the Federal Reserve
has facilitated economic growth or reduced the unemployment rate.

...Although the goal of quantitative easing was, in part,
to stabilize the price level against deflationary fears,
the Federal Reserve’s actions have likely led to more fluctuations
and uncertainty in our already weak economy.

Could central bank monetary stimulus borrow from future taxpayers
to pacify the present populace by overprinting money?

We have serious concerns that further intervention by the Federal Reserve
could exacerbate current problems or further harm the U.S. economy.

Such steps may erode the already weakened U.S. dollar
or promote more borrowing by overleveraged consumers.

Is the United States of America the "Land of the Free", if the nation's monetary policy
is performed by an unelected privately owned entity?

To date, we have seen no evidence that further monetary stimulus will create jobs
or provide a sustainable path towards economic recovery.

...The American people have reason to be skeptical of the Federal Reserve
vastly increasing its role in the economy if measurable outcomes cannot be demonstrated.

Sincerely,

Sen. Mitch McConnell, Rep. John Boehner, Sen. Jon Kyl, Rep. Eric Cantor
September 20,2011

"Dear Chairman Bernanke:

...we write to express our deep concerns over the recent announcement
that the Federal Reserve will purchase additional U.S. Treasury bonds,
the so-called Quantitative Easing 2 (QE2).

While intended to improve the short-term growth of the U.S. economy
and help maintain a stable price level,
such a measure introduces significant uncertainty
...could result both in hard-to-control, long-term inflation
and potentially generate artificial asset bubbles
that could cause further economic disruptions.

If the natural cycle of laissez faire capitalism revolves between risk and aversion,
what should happen if government intervention perverts the process
to forestall short term economic pain?

...Perhaps most damaging, we believe that QE2 is giving the impression
that the Federal Reserve will keep making new and different attempts
to boost the short-term prospects for the economy.

Are American taxpayers responsible for loans made to other country’s?

Our long-term growth depends on restoring confidence
and certainty in our fiscal, regulatory, and trade policies
-- and not on government’s willingness to engage in additional stimulative measures.

If the Federal Reserve lowered US short term interest rates to 0-0.25%,
enticing some savers to earn nothing or take more risk,
have artificially rising financial markets masked monetary and economic imbalances?

When asset prices increase due to anticipated Federal Reserve policy
rather than economic fundamentals, it increases the potential for speculative action
and erodes confidence in the economic outlook,
making it more difficult to generate sustainable growth."

If both Don and Nancy Vaughan voted to close the White Street Landfill in 2001,

GN&R Editorial Board Shamefull Propaganda Spin on Duke and Progress Layoffs?

"...Progress Energy, headquartered in Raleigh,

...Duke Energy, which is anchored in Charlotte.

Combined, they’ll serve more than 7 million customers, including most residents and businesses in North Carolina.

Otherwise known as a monopoly?

Rate cuts aren’t likely

The deal promises benefits, such as cost savings that can be passed to consumers.

Do the last two sentences contradict each other?

If there won't be rate cuts, what are the benefits?

...Duke only promises efficiencies that can “mitigate the future rate increases we expect.”

Sometimes people mistake the way I talk
for what I am thinking.

Idi Amin

...In Duke’s current service areas, customers should watch for signs that this equalization will result in Duke rates rising to meet falling Progress rates somewhere in the middle.

Since the long-term trend for prices is up,
the equalization (good for Progress customers, bad for Duke customers),
will be hidden by higher prices for all customers.

Peter Schwarz
Professor of Economics at UNC Charlotte

Everyone should gain from this deal, or it’s not worth doing.

Is what you think others think,
what they may be thinking,
or what they and/or some others want you to think they’re thinking?

...Some anxiety is felt in Raleigh, home city for Progress Energy. While a major administrative presence is likely to remain in the state capital, that’s not the same as a headquarters.

But keeping the corporate structure in-state is still a plus by any reckoning.

How is "keeping the corporate structure in-state" a plus for the laid off workers?
.
If another doesn’t say all they mean,
do they mean all they say?

A down side to the merger, which can take a year to complete, will be a loss of jobs. Duke says it will eliminate duplicative operations but has not disclosed numbers.

“I could foresee an eventual 10-15 percent reduction in the combined work force,” UNC Charlotte economics professor Peter Schwarz, an expert on the energy industry, told the News & Record by e-mail.

The two companies employ about 30,000 workers in six states. Schwarz’s estimate would mean job cuts of 3,000 to 4,500 — not all in North Carolina.

Just mostly "duplicative operations"
located at both headquarters located in North Carolina?

4,500 mid-level jobs x about $70,000 salary = $315,000,000 lost income?

30% of $315,000,000 = $94,500,000 lost fed, state and local taxes?

If there's no new jobs, how many mortgages could default?
.
How could home prices be affected?
.
How much could property and other taxes have to increase on everyone else
to make up for the lost tax revenue?

Did the GN&R Editorial Board consider the increased taxation?

While no loss of jobs is welcome, there could be compensating benefits. Reliable, low-cost energy is attractive to businesses, Schwarz said. With Duke’s low rates, “industry should view the increased Duke coverage as a positive.”

How can there be "compensating benefits" if rates and taxes continue to rise?

Duke is an “excellent ally,” said Dan Lynch, president of the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance, because of its competitive rates and “extremely high reliability quotient ... I would think it’s going to be good for everybody,” he said of a possible merger.

Except for the fired workers and the increased taxes on everyone in North Carolina,
right Dan?

Can some promoting erroneous concepts
believe self-created illusions?

Greater resources

...Duke should continue to create incentives for customers to reduce consumption through weatherization, use of energy-efficient appliances and other advances.

Thank goodness

An energy hub

With this merger, North Carolina can become an energy hub — especially if Duke steps up its commitment to develop wind, solar and bio fuel.

The power industry can remain a large employer in North Carolina, perhaps with fewer administrative jobs, but also with a greater emphasis on research and development.

Sometimes I wonder
whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on,
or by imbeciles who really mean it.

Mark Twain

Some uncertainties lie ahead. The deal must meet the approval of shareholders and state and federal regulators, who should guard the interests of consumers and the public.

Why would some utility company executives
want to work at state and federal regulatory agencies
and why would some retired regulators
want to work for the companies they regulated?

If all concerns are addressed, this Duke power surge might benefit customers and energize North Carolina."

Small Business Optimism Index

As posted at John Robinson's Editor's Log at the Greensboro News & Record website

Pulled Agenda Item #31 Local Developer and Crony Capitalist Roy Carroll Wants $4,176,775 in Economic Incentive Grant and Loan

Item #31 from Greensboro City Council agenda with attachments for September 13, 2011 meeting:

Resolution authorizing Economic Development Incentive Grant and Loan, not to exceed the amount of $4,176,775 in total, to Land Port Investments LLC to be funded by appropriating uo to $4,176,775 of voter approved Economic Development Bond funds. (no attachment) COUNCIL IS BEING REQUESTED TO POSTPONE THIS ITEM UNTIL OCTOBER 4, 2011 MEETING OF COUNCIL< WITHOUT FURTHER ADVERTISING.

So who is Land Port Investments LLC? CLICKHERE none other than our Guilford County CRONY CAPITALIST Roy Carroll.

To see a history of what has transpired in the past in regards to our CRONY CAPITALIST Roy Carroll this post on TRIADWATCH will help with a title Crony Capitalism and Local Developer Roy Carroll Red Flags on this American Express Incentive Deal More Info. and Repost   CLICKHERE

One major aspect of this item in front of the Greensboro City Council at this time is that Developer Roy Carroll likes to throw around his influence in regards to local elections which usually turn into $1,000 campaign contributions to local politicians already on council and some who are trying to get on council. Will we see Roy Carroll doling out his money to the local candidates right before they vote on this issue? Is this legal? or Ethical?

Back in 2007 we had Developer Roy Carroll form a Political Action Committee called "North Carolinians for Leadership in Government" here is that post Roy Carroll + PAC = Greensboro City Council , he has since disbanded the PAC and started giving himself.

Then this past election in Greensboro a few years ago the campaign contributions were off a little with $250 contributions to Jim Kee ,Dr. Trudy Wade,Robbie Perkins and also help from his wife Vanessa with some $100 contributions as well.

Now we see that Roy Carroll is back in business with seeing a contribution to at large Greensboro City Council candidate Cyndy Hayworth for $1,000 on 5-27-2011.

What will we see from our local Crony Capitalist Developer Roy Carroll in the next month will he give contributions to sitting local elected officials knowing full well this item will come up in front of the Greensboro City Council. Or will we see the back door contribution where it will not be reported till after the election is over .

This is the kind of situation that reeks of ethical issues and should be regulated by our state laws because in other states like Virginia we have this post on Triadwatch "Loundon County Virginia Bars Developers Campaign $, Guilford County Local Politicians Let's Try This ".

Let me also add this post on Triadwatch titled  "Greensboro Taxpayers Get Ready for a Shovel Ready Your Money To a Secret Developer, Can I Guess Our Local Crony Capitalist"

in the post i stated this back on May 23, 2011
"In the local section of Greensboro News and Record which is behind the pay wall so no links to article that on May 22, 2011 Donald Patterson has a article with a title " City Weighs shovel-ready site".

We learn from the article that in the next few weeks the Greensboro Ecomonic Development Alliance with chairman Dan Lynch with the help from Andy Scott assistant City Manager are wanting to have a shovel ready 100 acre site available to prospect for future tenants. Some of the proposal could be paid for with money from the economic bond approved in 2006.

Here is the kicker from the article:

Under the proposal a developer would provide the land and the city would get water and sewer in place in addition to clearing, rough grading and erosion control. The developer also would have to agree to certain restrictions on the property, such as not sub dividing it.

Local officials would not identify any potential developers or sites. "All that will be known when we go to council"Lynch said. That will be part of detailed proposal.

Can anyone guess who this proposal is geared toward? Could it be our local Crony Capitalist Roy Carroll? or Maybe the Crony Capitalist partner out in Rock Creek Center in Dick Beard who is Greensboro Coliseum Director Matt Brown's Head Cheerleader.

This whole idea smells like the American Express Data Center and Roy Carroll wants some back door incentives to pay for water and sewer to the development. I could be wrong on this one but i smell a rat in the making. We will see what the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance proposal is to the Greensboro City Council but hopefully we will not be hearing Roy Carroll's name on this one.

We heard for the longest time that American Expess was not wanting incentives to open up this data center but then we really know why they did not want the incentives because 6 months later they are in the process of closing a major customer service center out near the airport where more than 1,500 jobs would be moving out of the state to other centers occupied by American Express. How would it look for American Express to shut down and leave 1,500 workers out of a job but then have millions in economic incentive money coming to a data center that will employ at best 60 people.

It is always BS to hear these blowhards spewing out these no name companies that were going to locate in guilford county but the site wasn't available.

Hey Dan Lynch you would have more credibility if you didn't get quoted in paper with this:

"Lynch said one company recently came looking for a 200 acre site." They are still looking" he said when asked for details " That's all I can say"

Can't wait for this dog and pony show in front of the Greensboro City Council, with the head cheerleaders in the Greensboro News and Record following in tow.

We will see what happens in future in regards to campaign contributions and the $4 million dollars in economic bond money

Is this an example of News & Record complicity in protecting Greensboro's status quo?

"...last week the General Assembly stuck a fork in the city’s proactive and clearly effective
rental unit inspections program.

There the GOP went again, meddling in local affairs.

By signing the law, didn't Bev Perdue also meddle?

That’s too bad. By virtually any measure the RUCO program was working.

Two days after the program was effectively neutered
Beth McKee-Huger of the Greensboro Housing Coalition
was scheduled to speak about RUCO on a panel in Denver.

It had become a model for cities all over the country.

The program might have had a fighting chance
if the City Council had expressed any semblance of solid support.

It had that chance on June 7 with a proposed resolution in favor of RUCO.

It tabled the matter.

Did the News & Record Editorial Board raise the issue,
between the time City Council tabled the matter
and when the bill was passed by the state legislature?

The council should be held accountable in the coming election.

Who on City Council should be held accountable?

Allen Johnson

Why did Bev Perdue sign it?

Why didn't Robbie or anyone else speak up after it got out of congress?

wtf?

Bev Perdue could have vetoed it?

Why didn't she veto the bill Allen?

There's plenty of blame to go around on all sides.

What will they tell the widows, and/or orphans or the asthmatic or the burnt
or the broken?

Will we have spilt blood in exchange for campaign contributions?

Robbie didn't step up.

Skip didn't.

Small didn't.

Coleman didn't.

The NAACP didn't.

The Pulpit Forum.

The Simpkins PAC.

Pcjeort Heatsomed.

Aiogapn Bowrn Sevten Krouy

Come clean

By not mentioning Bev signed it into law puts you at at rhetorical disadvantage
by placing you on a side.

Please get off of all the sides.

Tell the truth.

Abner Doon, June 28, 2011 - 9:27 pm EDT

"I have no idea what your point is, Abner,
aside that I agree it would have been useful
to have seen some of the people and organizations you mention step forward.

Most of the ones you list are African American,
but this is not a racial issue as I see it.

Allen, where do you think most of those who this will harm live?

How many do you think are not white?

How can this not be a racial issue,
if most of those who will be harmed are not white?

I don't see why Wade, Knight, Thompson, Matheny and Rakestraw
didn't speak on RUCO's behalf either.

How can you not see they didn't speak up,
if much of their campaign cash comes from many
who wanted to get rid of RUCO?

Or were you just kidding?

If you weren't kidding,
why would you say that?

As for a veto, I imagine the governor did not see this one
rise to the level of many other bills she already has vetoed,
though it would have been nice if she had."

Allen Johnson, June 29, 2011 - 8:54 am EDT

Again, how can you not understand the correlation
between campaign contributions and legislation?

How can the News & Record talk about campaign contributions
in today's paper on a tax break for an out of town company,
and not recognize the same thing only different on local issues?

Could it be that Skip, Small, Coleman,
The NAACP, The Pulpit Forum and The Simpkins PAC
didn't speak up because they are a part of the problem?

How could they not be part of the problem,
if they didn't bother to stand up for the people they say they represent?

Why won't the Editorial Board call out our black leadership
for being what many believe to be crony hypocrites?

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

"Meaning - Don't be ungrateful when you receive a gift.

...category of phrases called proverbs, that is,
'short and expressive sayings, in common use,
which are recognized as conveying some accepted truth or useful advice'.

The phrase is often expressed as 'never look a gift horse in the mouth'.

As horses age their teeth begin to project further forward each year
and so their age can be estimated by checking how prominent the teeth are.

This incidentally is also the source of another teeth/age related phrase
- long in the tooth.

The advice given in the 'don't look...' proverb is: when given a present,
be grateful for your good fortune
and don't look for more by examining it to assess its value.
